Housing

Typical thatched hut on Pine Island in the late 1800s and early 1900s.  The old timers said that these palmettos huts were cool in the summer and warm in the winter.  To keep the bug and rat droppings off the food, they would string cloth just below the ceiling to catch anything on the way down.  The boy in the photo is Eugene Coleman at age of nine.  The photo location is Cayo Costa.

A more modern settler’s home constructed out of wood.  It does need a little work though.
